Respirology

To meet the rotational goals and objectives, the resident will be expected to play an active role as a team physician on the Respirology service by sharing in respiratory call duty, as well as actively participating in the consultation service, ward service and respirology clinics.  The resident will also be directly involved in fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination of patients as well as interpretation and observation of pulmonary function testing at the discretion of the rotation supervisor.  It is the intent of this  rotation that the resident spend approximately 2 weeks at each campus to facilitate the G&O’s. The rotational goals and objectives are listed below.

 

Knowledge:

 

1.  To gain an appreciation of the pathophysiology, presentation, diagnosis, and management of:

*   Asthma and status asthmaticus

*   COPD and other forms of obstructive lung disease

*   Restrictive lung disease

*   Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

*   Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor Pulmonale

*   Lung cancer

*   Pulmonary infections

 

2.  To gain an understanding of the investigational tools available to assess pulmonary function, and an understanding of the interpretation of available diagnostic tests including:

*   Pulmonary Function Tests

*   CXR interpretation

*   CT chest interpretation

*   ABG interpretation

*   Indications for V/Q scanning, and helical CT scanning

 

3.    To improve the resident’s preoperative risk assessment skills, consultation and optimization of patient’s scheduled for both thoracic surgery and non-thoracic surgery.

 

Skills:

 

1.    To gain proficiency in techniques for topical anesthesia of the airway.

 

2.    To gain proficiency in fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination in the awake patient for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
