To meet the rotational goals and objectives, the resident will be expected to play an active role in the Infectious Disease Consultation team, and participate in infectious disease clinics. The rotational goals and objectives are listed below.

 

1.    To gain an appreciation of the principles of infection control, isolation, sterilization and disinfection practices.

 

2.    To develop an appreciation of the principles of :

a)   Anti-infective therapy including pharmacotherapy

b)   Host defense mechanisms

c)    Investigation and management of a patient with Fever of Unknown Origin

d)   Antibiotic prophylaxis of infective endocarditis

e)   Investigation and empirical therapy of the immunocompromised febrile neutropenic patient

f)     Perioperative infection control and antibiotic prophylaxis

g)   Managing bacteremia associated with percutaneous intravascular catheters

h)   Managing infections in transplant recipients

 

3.    To gain an understanding of the pathophysiology of:

a)   The Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS)

b)   The spectrum of HIV / AIDS infections

 

4.    To gain an appreciation of the pathophysiology, presentation, investigation, differential diagnosis, and management of:

a)   Nosocomial and community acquired pulmonary infections

b)   Infections following trauma

c)    Infections following burns.
