The following rotational goals and objectives will be accomplished with the direction of the rotation supervisor by active participation in:

*   The general cardiology consultation service

*   The acute referral cardiac consultation service

*   Review of ECG’s with attending staff cardiologists

*   Participation in patient assessment in the cardiology clinics

*   Night call coverage in the Coronary Care Unit at the Heart Institute / General

 

The rotational goals and objectives listed below define the minimum core knowledge content that should be reviewed during the four-week block cardiology consultation – diagnostic rotation.

  The clinical exposure to each of the knowledge content areas will vary and is not expected to be an-inclusive.


Rotational Goals and Objectives:

 

1.    To gain an appreciation of the presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology and management of:

a)   Acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina, MI)

b)   Congestive heart failure and cardiogenic shock

c)    Cardiomyopathies (restrictive, dilated, congestive, and hypertrophic)

d)   Cardiac arrhythmia’s

 

2.    To acquire and enhance the residents knowledge base for interpretation of relevant ECG findings of ischemia / infarction, pressure overload, and conduction blocks.

 

3.    To acquire and enhance the residents’ knowledge base of common cardiovascular medications used in the management of chronic arrhythmia’s, ischemia, and heart failure.

 

4.    To enhance and improve upon relevant physical examination skills for the patient with heart disease.

 

5.    To teach and supervise junior houses staff, and participate in departmental rounds.
