University of Ottawa Vascular Anesthesia Fellowship
Program
The Vascular Anesthesia Fellowship program consists of twelve months of training in specialty area. The year is structured to meet the needs of the individual fellow who seeks specialized training in clinical practice, research and the use of transesophageal echocardiography in vascular anesthesia.
The objective of the Vascular Anesthesia Fellowship is to allow the Fellow to acquire the practical and intellectual skills necessary to care for the vascular patients, while also developing the academic skills to become leaders in clinical and academic anesthesiology.
Goals:
1.
Clinical experience in anesthesia and intensive care management of patients undergoing vascular surgery (nine months with four days/week in the OR). This includes:
- Pre-operative assessment of high risk vascular patients
- Anesthetic techniques and modalities for vascular patients undergoing Peripheral vascular surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, thoracic aneurysm repair, elective and emergency vascular surgery.
- Intra-operative monitoring for vascular patients including echocardiography.
- Endovascular techniques and anesthetic implication
- Post-operative management
- Intensive care unit management for high risk patients (three months)
2. Clinical research: The fellow is expected to participate in a research project and have an abstract presentation at the national meeting during the fellowship year.
3. Learning basic skills in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) - three months. Arrangement will be taken to accommodate the fellow for a period of three months to obtain basic TEE skills in the echo lab or the OR. The fellow is expected to spend 2 days a week in the echo lab or in the OR with anesthesiologist with echo skills.
4. Teaching and presentation experience: The fellow is expected to teach the resident the anesthetic techniques of the specialty area during the fellowship year. In addition, the fellow will present once to the Department an update on vascular anesthesia.
