University of Ottawa Regional Anesthesia Fellowship Program

The Ottawa Hospital is the major tertiary centre for the Nations capital and the primary teaching centre for the University of Ottawa. The Regional Anesthesia Fellowship program is well established and nationally recognized. Our subspecialty core group has received Regional Anesthesia Fellowship training from a variety of locations: Brigham and Women’s Harvard University, The Monash Medical centre, Australia, The Virginia Mason Center, Seattle, Duke University, and locally at the University of Ottawa. One of our members has been awarded the Canadian Anesthesiologist’s Society Clinical Teacher Award for outstanding contributions to Resident, Fellow and Medical student teaching and administration in Regional Anesthetic Techniques. Former graduates of our Fellowship training program have been instrumental in the development of their own regional anesthesia training in their home base nationally and internationally.
Come to Ottawa!

Come to Ottawa - you will not regret it

Our Fellowship program is one year in duration.

You will share your time between Civic and General Campus. This program focuses on a variety of orthopedic surgeries (rotator cuff, arthroscopic shoulder repairs, elbow/wrist arthroscopy), and also vascular (amputations, carotid endarterectomy, AV fistula) and trauma anesthesia. We also perform paravertebral single shot blocks for our mastectomy patients. This area of study has been awarded a Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Research Award. You will also rotate through the Riverside Campus. The Riverside is the site of all ambulatory surgery and also the base site for our outpatient ambulatory plexus service. We have recently acquired ultrasound machines and will incorporate them as a standard in our Fellowship program. We have kept the Fellow numbers to one in order to maximize exposure for and increase teaching opportunities. From my personal experience, one year will allow for a maximal breath of exposure and participation in research trials.

We are fortunate at The Ottawa Hospital in that we have 7 formal Regional  Anesthesia Fellowship trained Anesthesiologists.
