Perioperative Medicine Fellowship Program
Department of Anesthesiology, University of Ottawa

Perioperative Medicine

Perioperative medicine represents a comprehensive approach to the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of the surgical patient. Training in Perioperative Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa will expose the Fellow to the continuum of perioperative care. Fellowship training will be equally divided among:
  • Preoperative Assessment
  • Intraoperative Anesthesia
  • Acute Pain Management
  • The Ottawa Hospital

The Ottawa Hospital is a tertiary care, university-affiliated, teaching hospital on three campuses. The Civic and General Campuses are inpatient referral centers that house specialty Neurosurgical, Vascular, Trauma, Orthopedic, and Thoracic programs. The Riverside Campus is a freestanding ambulatory surgery facility performing approximately 15,000 procedures annually.

    Preoperative Assessment

The fellow will rotate through the Pre-Admission Units (PAUs) at each Campus of the Ottawa Hospital to ensure a wide exposure to surgical subspecialties and the unique challenges of free standing ambulatory care. The fellow will be offered the opportunity to work with specialists allied with the PAU including cardiologists, hematologists and nuclear cardiographers.

    Intraoperative Anesthesia

The fellow will work clinically in the operating rooms of the Ottawa Hospital to encourage retention and expansion of clinical anesthesia skills. The fellow will follow interesting or challenging cases seen in PAU to the OR whenever possible.

    Acute Pain Service

The Civic and General Campuses have Acute Pain Services (APS) staffed by both Anesthesiologists and Advanced Practice Nurses. The fellow will gain experience with parenteral, neuraxial, and continuous catheter plexus analgesia.

    Organization

The fellow will divide their time between the PAU, the OR, and the APS in equal thirds. APS care will be provided in one-week blocks to maximize continuity of care. PAU and OR rotations will fill the remaining 2 weeks of each cycle.

    Research

The Department of Anesthesia at the Ottawa Hospital has active research programs in acute pain management, perioperative cognition, and outcomes research. Several faculty members are cross-appointed to the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Fellows will be offered approximately one non-clinical day per week to pursue their research interests.
